1). gFView HIGHLIGHTS:
gFView is a shareware graphic file viewer ADD-ON to Vernon D. Buergs LIST.
Graphic file formats supported - JPEG, PCX, BMP, GIF.
Graphics hardware ------- Supports most video cards automatically,
(Auto-detecting) including HI color & accelerator support. The
user does not need to to know his graphics cards
features to use. Uses VESA modes where possible.
Low memory requirements - Works in as little as 550k free dos space before
LIST is loaded (most features will still work
below this amount of memory, but as memory
decreases fuctionality will be lost). Does NOT
require extended or expanded memory to operate.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2). INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to gFView. gFView adds the ability to view graphic files directly
from the File Selection Menu of Vernon D. Buergs LIST program. Users who are
already familiar with using the "V" key to VIEW the contents of a compressed
file will be right at home using this graphics add on.
Simply pressing the "V" key while having a GRAPHIC file selected will
automatically VIEW that file. gFView handles the mechanics of properly setting
the graphics card of your computer to view the requested graphic file. If you
selected a compressed file gFView will pass that request along to the FV.COM
utility and it will work as it had prior to installing gFView. gFView
handles 2 color to HI color images. gFView does not require more than 550K DOS
work space before loading LIST for proper operation. gFView will attempt to
switch to a graphics mode equal to or the next available higher resolution in
order to view the entire image.
While gFView handles most graphic situations for you it does have some
limitations. The image is drawn on the display AS it is read from the file.
Some viewers will load the graphic file into RAM and then present the image all
at once. gFView does not store the image in this manner. gFView does NOT dither
or translate an image of high color down to a lower number of colors such as
from a HI color image to 256 colors. gFView will not allow you to scroll around
the image. gFView will attempt to find the BEST graphics mode your graphics card
can support to view the image in its native palette. Newer graphics cards work
well with gFView. gFView will use VESA modes if needed to view an image. Older
graphic cards may need to load a VESA TSR to add VESA compatibility that their
card may not directly support. This program is a viewer ONLY, NOT a converter.
One other item to mention is CPU type and speed. gFView was programmed to work
on 286 based machines and up. However actual operation will be less than desired
on 386-25's and lower. While slower machines will provide acceptable speed
when viewing PCX images, most of the other supported formats especially JPEG
images will be unacceptable to most users. The faster the machine the better
it works. By the way gFView works quite well on Pentium based systems.
Keeping with the provided features and limitations mentioned above the
gFView executable file has been kept reasonably small (just over 100k). This
allows it to load quickly. By keeping memory requirments low, gFView can be
used on systems with only 640k base RAM.
I hope gFView provides you with a convenient method of viewing your graphic
files whether its at work or for your personal use. This program was developed
to blend as well as possible with Vernon D. Buergs LIST program. If you are a
user of the LIST menuing and file handling program and you work with graphic
files you will find gFView a pleasure to use.
